Facebook

There was a time where I loved going on Facebook. But I have found that it just isn’t what it used to be. This could have started when my friend Bobby was talking about leaving. At the time I tried to convince him otherwise. But now I am starting to see things in a different light. Although his comments may have have a small part of it, I do believe this goes back even further. In fact I think this dates back to before last years election.
I was not impressed by either of the major candidates running for president.  When I commented on this fact, I got a number of negative responses. The next thing I knew, I was arguing with at least two people. I finally realized that I was falling into my old habit of playing politics and that was something I promised myself I wouldn’t do anymore.
In fact people pushing their political views in your face is the biggest thing that turns me off with Facebook. It comes off as childish nonsense. The irony is that I used to play this game. Then one day, I realized that my actions were no different than the negative campaign ads that I hated seeing on TV. The truth was that my political views were my business and that is it.
Now with election day starting to approach, it will start all over again and I am not interested in looking at posts that boil down to, “My party is better than yours is!”.
I just don’t need to see it. So I am planning to go on hiatus from September until December.
But it isn’t just politics, it is a number of things. One thing that drove me crazy were these game requests. It got to the point where I had to sit down and block the games.
The fact is, I didn’t signup with Facebook to play politics or games. I signed up to keep in touch with friends and family. As well as those I share something in common with.
Earlier this summer, I talked about leaving Facebook and my sister wondered why.
I tried to explain it to her and she didn’t understand where I was coming from.
Looking back I realize that Facebook is negative in so many ways and I just don’t need it. Besides I realize I need to do something more constructive with my  time and that is why I am making greater effort at blogging. It is a way to share my thoughts in a more creative manner.  The one thing I will give Facebook is the fact that it has allowed me to connect & reconnect with family, friends and others from my past. I have also gotten to know a number of interesting people that I share a common interest with. But I have better things to do with my life than to spend it on Facebook.
